Orchid Tank is an exciting new wine and beer bar in Adelaide’s premier CBD restaurant strip on Gouger Street. The designers, Spectra Building Designers and Faculty Design, were after something “rustic and Australiana” to promote Australian wine and beer and, not being specialists in lighting, came to Haneco to realise their lighting design.
They had a clear idea of the look they wanted and relied on Haneco to provide customised solutions in addition to standard lines. The food preparation areas are lit with one of our standard food safe LED battens, BLADE, and many of the lights featured above the bar are the dimmable surface mounted METEOR downlights.
Another freely available Haneco product taking pride of place in the main design is the strip light FLEXION. Spectra’s Director Frank Barilla says: “We’re introducing them a lot in these types of fit outs, especially when you’re showcasing wine bottles”. Strip lights are easy to install, and they work well highlighting bars. Frank is something of an enthusiast when it comes to strip lights and uses them on his boat (apparently red is useful for navigating at night and reading instruments). He also uses them in his home and “I recommend it a lot to my friends to use in kitchen areas and bathroom areas near vanities and mirrors… it’s excellent.”
Haneco was happy to provide customised fittings to fully bring about Spectra and Faculty’s vision for the space with a number of retro look wall lights and pendant lights creating the all-important ambience of the bar. The bulbs emit the sort of warm and welcoming light essential to a place where people want to come and relax. At first glance they look like old fashioned incandescents with glowing filaments, but, like all Haneco products, they are 100% LED.
As you would expect in any process involving so many decisions there was “some variation from the selection we had”, but an experienced designer like Frank found this entirely expected and was impressed how Haneco’s “design team kept us in the loop.” Good communication underpins these collaborations, something that Haneco’s professional staff understand well. Haneco provided a schedule of all luminaires required, the layout and a visual rendering of the plan.
The Orchid Tank project demonstrates that an LED specialist like Haneco is not confined to refitting industrial spaces with highbays or providing the lighting for supermarkets. Intimate spaces that depend on clever mood lighting to create atmosphere are also part of our design service. Joint efforts with designers who have a clear vision deliver results that satisfy everyone from the clients to the interior designers and ultimately the customers.
