Going overboard with LED

LED lights have proven to be so effective at attracting fish that the Indian government has banned their use. Submersible green LEDs that don’t need a great deal of power and seem irresistible to fish are yet another surprising application of this flexible light source.

But green they are not in the sense that they make fishing too productive and reduce stocks too dramatically. Traditional fisherman in India welcomed the recent ban with the secretary of the Nadadoni Fishermen Association of Uttara Kannada, Somanath Moger saying “Light fishing does not promote sustainable fishing but over exploits marine resources and destroys juveniles thereby causing imbalance.”
