FAQ

What are Lumens?

Lumens (lm) are a measure of the visible light produced by a light source. The higher the lumen rating, the brighter it will be. Lumens are a good way to compare LED light output with other light sources.  You can find out more about lumens and watts on this page.

I have an existing cutout, will an LED fitting fit?

More often than not, the answer is yes! As LED lighting is often used to retrofit existing lighting, many shapes and sizes have been made to ensure there is one to suit your needs.  Several Haneco downlights have adaptor plates that make it possible to put a 90mm cutout downlight into larger holes.

Are LED lights dimmable?

Yes, however their ability to do so is dependent on the driver that the individual fitting uses. Haneco Lighting includes dimmable drivers with most of their downlights, but it is not a standard inclusion on all products.

What is Lux level?

Lux level refers to the intensity of light in a specific space. It is a measure of lumens/m². For example ideal lux levels are  240lux for food preparation, 320lux for offices and 600lux for electronic assembly work. You can find out more about lux and illuminance on this page.

How far apart should downlights be?

Spacing decisions need to be made on a case-by-case basis as it will be dependent on factors such as downlight type, room dimensions, how the room is used, the amount of natural light in the room as well as other factors.

Can a downlight safely operate if it touches insulation?

Only if it has been classified with a CA, IC or IC-F rating. CA classifications allow insulation to side abut the downlight and IC allows it to cover the downlight. Please refer to the installation instructions.

Why are LED wattages so much lower than other comparable light sources?

LED lights operate by converting energy straight to light, whereas traditional light sources convert energy to heat in order to produce light, which means LEDs use less watts to produce the same light output. It also means that they are not particularly hot to touch.

What is an IP rating?

IP stands for ‘ingress protection’ which refers to what the fitting can keep out.  The first digit rates the product’s ability to prevent entry of things such as insects or dust with 6 being dust tight.  the second digit rates water resistance on a scale of 1 – 8, with 8 allowing continuous immersion.   As a general guide, IP44 is for general indoor use, IP54 for protected outdoor locations and IP65 can take being out in the rain. Our Glossary of Terms has the details.

What is CRI?

Colour Rendering Index measures the ability of a light source to faithfully reproduce the colour of various objects. The closer it is to 100, the higher the quality of the light source. You can find out more about CRI on Glossary of Terms.

How long do they last?

LED light fittings should last for at least 30,000 hours. So if you used your lights 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, they should last for 10 years.  All Haneco fittings  are expected to last for 50,000 hours.

What happens when they stop working?

LED lights have longer lifespans than traditional sources, but when they do fail you’ll need to replace the entire fitting unless it is a unit that has a replaceable lamp. Early failures are likely to be covered by warranty conditions.

Some highbays need time to ‘warm up’.   Are LED highbays the same?

No. Unlike metal halide, LED high bays will switch on instantly. This is true for all LED light fittings including replacement T8 tubes, downlights, battens and flood lights.
