The research, led by Associate Professor Susan Woods, involves the use of 3D human tissue ‘organoids’ to test for genetic changes and drug sensitivity in stomach cancer patients. This innovative approach, a collaboration between SAHMRI and the University of Adelaide, offers hope for tailored treatments and potentially better outcomes for individuals facing this challenging disease
The Power of Organoids
Organoids are miniature 3D models of organs grown from a patient’s own tissue. They reflect the patient’s unique genetic and molecular characteristics, accurately predicting their response to treatments. Organoids offer a personalised approach to help researchers identify effective treatments.
A Leap Forward in Treatment
“This is the first study of its kind to assess the effectiveness of organoid analysis in guiding future treatment,” A/Prof Woods said. Researchers can identify the most promising therapies for each patient by testing different drugs on organoids, potentially improving treatment outcomes and reducing adverse effects
