The Queensland University of Technology, better known as QUT, is a major university in Brisbane that boasts over 50,000 students on two campuses. The Gardens Point city campus adjacent to the Botanic Gardens is home to an industrial design workshop that until recently was doubling as a museum for superseded 400W metal halide lighting.

Real world problem

QUT’s motto is ‘a university for the real world’ and the reality of rising electricity costs plus the continual maintenance of the old fixtures meant the uni was ready to join the rest of the industrial world and upgrade to LED. The university chose Haneco’s tried and tested SKYPAD LED highbays as replacements.

High lux level without glare

The SKYPADs were fitted out with polycarbonate diffusers and metal reflectors to reduce glare because the workshop does not have a sufficiently high ceiling to suit the new LED highbay’s 5 metre mounting height. The old fittings were lowbays, but the required lux levels on work planes need the substantial lumen output of the SKYPAD 150W, which is 21,000 lumens without a diffuser.

Style and substance

The metal reflectors are useful in such a low position for ensuring people aren’t dazzled and just happen to be more in keeping with the style of the old building with its arched windows. You can see how well they light the space while sticking to the industrial style of such a practical workshop.
