The essence of the event set to be the most watched AFL game in history is engaging with an economic superpower on a range of levels. Politicians including the new SA Premier Steven Marshall will attend in the interests of both strengthening and establishing business relationships. Chinese free-to-air TV stations will find an audience estimated to number around 10 million for the game played on a 1930s era facility brought up to professional AFL standards by a substantial investment from Port Adelaide. There is a clear commitment from the AFL to showing genuine matches in China and Port is fostering the development of the game with Australian football clinics in Shanghai schools. Haneco’s strong Chinese connections along with its financial commitment to such a high profile sports club are a great example of the benefits that can flow from working together in this way.

The sell out match has attracted thousands of locals curious to see AFL live as well as a legion of loyal fans from Adelaide. Port Adelaide are heavily favoured to win the match on the back of a sensational victory over their arch rivals Adelaide and a 5-3 record for the season. Gold Coast are not to be dismissed despite their recent indifferent form. They were, after all, Port’s opponent in the inaugural match in China last year and have plenty of incentive to avenge a heavy loss. The contest could be a lot closer than many pundits are predicting.
